Kuvempu University is a young affiliating University in Karnataka. Established in 1987, it is a University with a distinctive academic profile, blending in itself commitment to rural ethos and a modern spirit. It has 41 Post-Graduate departments of studies in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Education and Law. Offering 45 Post-Graduate Programmes, 4 P.G.Diploma and one Under-Graduate programme. The University has 184 affiliated colleges, five constituent colleges (among five, one is autonomous college) and other three autonomous colleges, five B.P.Ed. colleges, six Law colleges and 43 B.Ed. colleges under its jurisdiction spread over 4 districts of Shimoga, Chitradurga, Chikmagalur and Davangere. It also has outlying regional Post-Graduate centres at Davangere and Kadur. Jnana Sahyadri, the main campus of Kuvempu University is located at Shankaraghatta at a distance of 28 kms. from Shimoga town, the district headquarters and 18 kms. from Bhadravathi, the well-known industrial town. The campus is only 2 kms. from the magnificent Bhadra Reservoir across the river Bhadra, one of the important life lines of the area. The main buildings of the University have been constructed on a small hillock, thus blending naturally with the landscape. The campus sprawls over an area of 230 acres. The entire campus area is free from any form of pollution including noise pollution. There is no exaggeration in saying that the undisturbed and pleasing atmosphere on the campus makes it ideally suited for the pursuit of higher education. The main campus can be reached by using the private bus service. Shimoga, Bhadravathi and Tarikere towns are close to the campus and are well connected by rail. Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering (JNNCE) was established in the year 1980 by the National Education Society, a pioneer society in Malnad region founded by freedom fighters of high repute. The College is affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The college is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and also by Government of Karnataka. The College campus is spread over an area of more than forty acres having all amenities to cater to the needs of about 1500 students and 200 staff members. Institution offers eight undergraduate courses (B.E) and four P.G.Courses (M.Tech in C.S & E and Internet & Network Engg., M.C.A and M.B.A). Research & Development centres have been started in Civil Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electrical Engg., Electronics & Communication Engg., Computer Science Engg. and MBA departments. Engineering graduates can pursue their Ph.D and M.Sc (Engg) by Research at these centres. Telecommunications & Engineering B.E course has been introduced from the academic year 2000-2001. During the Freedom
struggle, Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation stressed the need for
quality rural education and development of women education and urged the
leaders and youth to help in promoting it. Senior Freedom fighters and
public of Shimoga were first to respond to the call of Mahatma. In 1946
they set up the National education society at Shimoga which is the
important place of Malnad Area of Western Ghat Region in the Country which
is endowed with rich and enchanting grace of Nature.
The Society with the zeal dedication of senior leaders of the district like Mr. S.V.Krishna Murthy Rao former deputy speaker of Loksabha, Mr.H.S.Rudrappa, Former Minister of Karnataka. Mr.P.Murudappa, Mr.R.K.Jayatheerthachar and Mr.S.Narasimha Murthy senior Advocates, Mr.S.R.Nagappa Shetty Ex-MLA and a great social worker and others strived hard to build the institution as founders to achieve the aspirations of Mahatma. The society started a first privately Managed High School in the district during 1946 and constructed its own building with public assistance. With a view to give thrust towards girl’s education NES opened the first Girl’s High School in the district in 1954 and gradually opened educational institutions in rural areas of the district to cater the needs of rural people. Many illustrious leaders, statesman, personalities have visited the National education Society and have blessed it by appreciating the dedicated service of the society. Among them are Dr.Rajendra Prasad, former President of India, Philosopher educationist Dr.S.Radha Krishnan, former president of India, Shri Lal Bahadhur Shastry, Former Prime Minister of India, Sri Jayachamaraj wodeyar former Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Vinoba Bhave a great leader of Sarvodaya movement, Acharya Tulsi leader of Anavarath Movement are few among them. Despite number of problems during and after freedom struggle the enthusiasm and commitment of National Education Society never deter towards working for the cause of education. The society started number of professional Colleges in the district. Now it is running 31 educational institutions providing education to more than 14000 students with 800 staff force. Starting from giving importance to Primary, Secondary and Pre-University education by opening number of Schools and Junior College, the National Education Society is offering courses with high quality in Engineering, Law, Commerce, Pharmacy education, Applied Science and Home Science through its well established colleges. Thousands of Aluminies from these institutions have made their name and earned their fame by obtaining national and international recognitions in their respective fields. It is a matter of great satisfaction to the society in its efforts to do best for imparting good education to students. Good number of students are coming out from its institutions with flying colours obtaining distinction every year. The Society is managed by an Executive Committee. The directors have taken the development of the Society as a life mission and are continuing the efforts to fulfill the aspirations of its founders. It has provided all the necessary facilities with adequate infrastructure to students and staff to promote both curricular and co-curricular activities. he National Education Society observed its Golden Jubilee during 1998, and dedicated a statue to Mr.S.R.Nagappa Shetty, a man who devoted his life to the development of the society.
