Educational scenario is bright in Shimoga District. There are many educational institutions which cater the educational needs of the District. Each habitation with 200 population or more is having Primary School. There are Higher Primary Schools, High Schools and Junior Colleges which are easily accessible to rural areas also. Each Taluk Headquarter is having a Degree College. There is an Engineering College, Dental College and Polytechnic to cater the need of higher education and technical education. Even rural areas are also accessible for higher education. The District is having a high tradition in the field of culture and literature. It has a rich heritage of cultural and literary background. One University Center is also situated in the District.



There are 1106 Lower Primary Schools and 1185 Higher Primary Schools in the District of which 998 Government Lower Primary Schools and 940 Government Higher Primary Schools. Only 3 Aided Lower Primary Schools and 53 Aided Higher Primary Schools are there in the District. 90% of the Lower Primary Schools are Government Schools. Only 0.3% is Aided Lower Primary Schools and 9.7% are Unaided Lower Primary Schools. Among Higher Primary Schools, 79% are Government Schools, 4.47% are Aided Higher Primary Schools and 16.53% are Unaided Higher Primary Schools. The Government has opened many schools in the District and extended support for private managements to run Primary Schools.

Kuvempu University

Kuvempu University is a young affiliating University in Karnataka. Established in 1987, it is a University with a distinctive academic profile, blending in itself commitment to rural ethos and a modern spirit. It has 41 Post-Graduate departments of studies in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Education and Law. Offering 45 Post-Graduate Programmes, 4 P.G.Diploma and one Under-Graduate programme. The University has 184 affiliated colleges, five constituent colleges (among five, one is autonomous college) and other three autonomous colleges, five B.P.Ed. colleges, six Law colleges and 43 B.Ed. colleges under its jurisdiction spread over 4 districts of Shimoga, Chitradurga, Chikmagalur and Davangere. It also has outlying regional Post-Graduate centres at Davangere and Kadur.

The academic life on the campus is vibrant and exciting with seminars, symposia, special lectures and workshops throughout the year. Both the conventional and non-conventional course of study have updated syllabi responsive to the needs of the contemporary society and the research orientation is innovative, original and directed to societal needs. The main campus is in the lap of a lush, picturesque locale providing the right ambience for University education. Indeed, Kuvempu University is a place one would love to be associated with.

Jnana Sahyadri, the main campus of Kuvempu University is located at Shankaraghatta at a distance of 28 kms. from Shimoga town, the district headquarters and 18 kms. from Bhadravathi, the well-known industrial town. The campus is only 2 kms. from the magnificent Bhadra Reservoir across the river Bhadra, one of the important life lines of the area. The main buildings of the University have been constructed on a small hillock, thus blending naturally with the landscape. The campus sprawls over an area of 230 acres. The entire campus area is free from any form of pollution including noise pollution. There is no exaggeration in saying that the undisturbed and pleasing atmosphere on the campus makes it ideally suited for the pursuit of higher education. The main campus can be reached by using the private bus service. Shimoga, Bhadravathi and Tarikere towns are close to the campus and are well connected by rail.

The Administrative Building "Kuvempu Shathamanothsava Bhavan" on the main Jnana Sahyadri campus houses almost all the offices of the University including the office and secretariat of the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, Human Resource Management, Development, Academic, Finance section, SC-ST Cell & OBC Cell, Planning, Monitory and Evaluation Board, etc. The Examination, Directorate of Distance Education are located in Parikshanga - Doora Shikshana Bhavan. All these offices are fully computerized. For the convenience of students, a City office of enquiry of the University is functioning at a building located opposite Sahyadri College Campus in Shimoga.

The Academic block on the main campus houses the Post-Graduate departments of studies in English, Political Science, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, MSW, Economics, Sociology, English Language Teaching, Journalism & Mass Communication. The Department of Library & Information Science is in the new library building. The Department of Computer Science, Mathematics, MCA and Electronics are housed in Mathematics - Computer Science Building. The Science Block houses the Post-Graduate departments of studies in Physics, General Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Bio Chemistry.

The Bio-Science Complex houses the departments of Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Environmental Sciences, Water management & Water Harvesting, Wild Life Management, Applied Botany, Microbiology and Applied Zoology. 2500 s.ft green house is built under "HERBAL GARDEN" Scheme of Dept. of Horticulture during the year 2005-06. The Institute of Kannada Studies is located in the new building in Kuvempu Shathamanothsava Bhavan. The Museum building near the administrative building houses the Post-Graduate departments of studies in History and Archaeology, Master of Tourism and Heritage studies and Museum of Kannada Bharati & Kannada computer centre sponsored by Infosys Foundation.


POST-GRADUATE CENTRE, DAVANGERE ( Shivagangotri Campus)

The Shivagangothri campus located at Tholahunase, 8 kms.from Davangere houses the Post-Graduate departments of Commerce, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Economics, Food & Nurtition Technology and Accounting & Financial Analysis. The Institute of Management Studies is also located at PG Centre. The campus of 73 acres has attractive buildings as well as hostels. Davangere is an important commercial and industrial town in the State, very well connected by the national highway and rail. The Post-Graduate departments of studies in Commerce, Economics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food & Nurtrition Technology and Master of Social Work are located at Shivagangothri campus of Post-Graduate centre at Davangere The Institute of Management Studies is located in a new building at Shivagangothri.

POST-GRADUATE CENTRE, KADUR
A new Post-Graduate Centre at Kadur started from the academic year 2007-08. Initially three courses namely Master of Business Economics(MBE), Master of Business Administration(MBA) and M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry have been started in the premises of Govt.Junior College. For the purpose of establishing PG Centre at Kadur, the State Government has alloted 65 acres of land adjacent to Kadur town and also released Rs.2 crore for the development of the P.G.Centre.

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College and Sahyadri Science College, Shimoga

Sahyadri Arts and Science Colleges and Sahyadri Science College, erstwhile Government institutions are now constituent Colleges of Kuvempu University. These premiere Colleges of this region have completed 66 years of existence. Among the celebrities who are alumni of the Colleges are Dr. U.R. Ananthamurthy, Jnana Peetha Awardee, Prof. C.N.R. Rao, eminent scientist, Sri K.V. Subbanna, Magsaysay Awardee and others. In fact the Colleges have contributed illustrious personsto every important fields. The Sahyadri Science College has become autonomous College from 2006-07. Diamond Jubilee Building constructed with partial financial support of Allumni association includes well equipped Seminar hall inaugurated by Prof. CNR Rao & named as Prof. CNR Rao Hall.

UNIVERSITY B.D.T. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, DAVANAGERE B.D.T.
as it is known popularly, was started in the year 1951 as Govt. B.D.T. College of Engineering with only one branch-Civil Engineering. Subsequently other branches viz Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Instrumentation Technology and Industrial Production Engineering were started with the total annual intake of 390. A Post Graduate course in Production Engineering Systems Technology was started in the year 1987 with an intake of 25. Seven other PG Courses are being offered from 2003-04. The college was named as Brahmappa Devendrappa Tavanappanavar College of Engineering, in short B.D.T. College of Engineering, as the famous B.T. Family had generously donated a sum of rupees 1.5 lakh towards the construction of the main building. The then Maharaja of Mysore Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar laid the foundation stone of the college building on 7 April 1951 and inaugurated the building on 24 September 1956. In due course the college was transferred from the Government to Kuvempu University in 1992 and accordingly the name of the college was changed as University B.D.T. College of Engineering.

UNIVERSITY FINE ARTS COLLEGE, DAVANAGERE
The College of Fine Arts at Davangere is a unique institution. It offers Courses of applied nature in many of the Fine Arts subjects. The faculty of the college includes some of the best known artists. The college offers instructions leading to B.F.A.Degree. From the academic year 2003-04 M.F.A. Degree in Painting and Applied Art, and Certificate Course in Computer photography have being introduced.

Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering (JNNCE)

Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering (JNNCE) was established in the year 1980 by the National Education Society, a pioneer society in Malnad region founded by freedom fighters of high repute. The College is affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The college is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and also by Government of Karnataka. The College campus is spread over an area of more than forty acres having all amenities to cater to the needs of about 1500 students and 200 staff members. Institution offers eight undergraduate courses (B.E) and four P.G.Courses (M.Tech in C.S & E and Internet & Network Engg., M.C.A and M.B.A). Research & Development centres have been started in Civil Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electrical Engg., Electronics & Communication Engg., Computer Science Engg. and MBA departments. Engineering graduates can pursue their Ph.D and M.Sc (Engg) by Research at these centres. Telecommunications & Engineering B.E course has been introduced from the academic year 2000-2001. Around 3000 graduates in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial & Production Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering have passed out from this College and have made significant contributions in Academic institutions, Industries, R & D organisations and Government departments in India and abroad.

National Education Society (NES)
During the Freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation stressed the need for quality rural education and development of women education and urged the leaders and youth to help in promoting it. Senior Freedom fighters and public of Shimoga were first to respond to the call of Mahatma. In 1946 they set up the National education society at Shimoga which is the important place of Malnad Area of Western Ghat Region in the Country which is endowed with rich and enchanting grace of Nature.

The Society with the zeal dedication of senior leaders of the district like Mr. S.V.Krishna Murthy Rao former deputy speaker of Loksabha, Mr.H.S.Rudrappa, Former Minister of Karnataka. Mr.P.Murudappa, Mr.R.K.Jayatheerthachar and Mr.S.Narasimha Murthy senior Advocates, Mr.S.R.Nagappa Shetty Ex-MLA and a great social worker and others strived hard to build the institution as founders to achieve the aspirations of Mahatma.

The society started a first privately Managed High School in the district during 1946 and constructed its own building with public assistance. With a view to give thrust towards girl’s education NES opened the first Girl’s High School in the district in 1954 and gradually opened educational institutions in rural areas of the district to cater the needs of rural people.

Many illustrious leaders, statesman, personalities have visited the National education Society and have blessed it by appreciating the dedicated service of the society. Among them are Dr.Rajendra Prasad, former President of India, Philosopher educationist Dr.S.Radha Krishnan, former president of India, Shri Lal Bahadhur Shastry, Former Prime Minister of India, Sri Jayachamaraj wodeyar former Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Vinoba Bhave a great leader of Sarvodaya movement, Acharya Tulsi leader of Anavarath Movement are few among them.

Despite number of problems during and after freedom struggle the enthusiasm and commitment of National Education Society never deter towards working for the cause of education. The society started number of professional Colleges in the district. Now it is running 31 educational institutions providing education to more than 14000 students with 800 staff force. Starting from giving importance to Primary, Secondary and Pre-University education by opening number of Schools and Junior College, the National Education Society is offering courses with high quality in Engineering, Law, Commerce, Pharmacy education, Applied Science and Home Science through its well established colleges.

Thousands of Aluminies from these institutions have made their name and earned their fame by obtaining national and international recognitions in their respective fields.

It is a matter of great satisfaction to the society in its efforts to do best for imparting good education to students. Good number of students are coming out from its institutions with flying colours obtaining distinction every year.

The Society is managed by an Executive Committee. The directors have taken the development of the Society as a life mission and are continuing the efforts to fulfill the aspirations of its founders. It has provided all the necessary facilities with adequate infrastructure to students and staff to promote both curricular and co-curricular activities.

he National Education Society observed its Golden Jubilee during 1998, and dedicated a statue to Mr.S.R.Nagappa Shetty, a man who devoted his life to the development of the society.
